Linux malware hidden in Cemu Wii U emulator AppImage

If you recently downloaded the Cemu emulator for Linux from the project’s GitHub, be aware: it may have added malware to your system. The team behind the Wii U emulator discovered that both the official AppImage and its Ubuntu ZIP assets for the Cemu 2.6 release available to download from Github were “compromised” – only those builds; Flatpak was not affected, nor installers for Windows and macOS. To wit: if you downloaded Cemu 2.6 between 6 May, 2026 and 12 May from the project’s GitHub page or, as importantly, a third-party launcher which downloads a build from there instead, and […]

[$] Using dma-bufs for read and write operations

The kernel's dma-buf subsystem provides a way for drivers to share memory buffers, usually in order to support efficient device-to-device I/O. At the 2026 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory Management, and BPF Summit, Pavel Begunkov, assisted by Kanchan Joshi, led a joint session of the storage and memory-management tracks to explore ways to make the use of dma-bufs more efficient yet, and to make them available for read and write operations initiated by user space.

FreeBSD 15.2 Will Aim For The Nice KDE Desktop Installation Experience

FreeBSD 15.0 had aimed to provide a KDE desktop install option from its text-based OS installer to make for a more compelling FreeBSD out-of-the-box desktop experience. That was then delayed to FreeBSD 15.1 but that didn't end up materializing. Now the KDE desktop install option is diverted to FreeBSD 15.2...

Ubuntu 26.10 Development Officially Begins as ‘Stonking Stingray’ Takes Shape

by George Whittaker Canonical has officially kicked off development planning for Ubuntu 26.10, the next interim release of the popular Linux distribution. Codenamed “Stonking Stingray,” the release is scheduled to arrive on October 15, 2026, continuing Ubuntu’s predictable six-month development cycle. Although Ubuntu 26.10 is still in the early planning stages, the release roadmap already offers hints about what users can expect from the next generation of Ubuntu. A New Interim Release After Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Ubuntu 26.10 follows the recently released Ubuntu 26.04 LTS “Resolute Raccoon”, which introduced major platform changes including Linux 7.0, GNOME 50, Wayland-only sessions, and expanded TPM-backed security features. Unlike the LTS release, Ubuntu 26.10 will be a short-term support release, receiving updates for nine months instead of the five years offered by LTS editions. These interim releases are typically used to introduce newer technologies and prepare the groundwork for futu

[$] Scaling transparent huge pages to 1GB

As a general rule, when developers talk about huge pages, they are referring to PMD-level pages that are 1MB or 2MB in size, depending on the CPU architecture. Most CPUs can support other huge-page sizes, though. On x86 systems, PUD-level huge pages hold 1GB of data. Providing such large pages transparently to processes has generally not been considered as either feasible or desirable, but Usama Arif is trying to change that assessment. At the 2026 Linux Storage, Filesystem, Memory Management, and BPF Summit, he led a session in the memory-management track on how to make transparent huge pages (THPs) truly huge.
